Captain Janeway - My captain, my role model

I was not sure what to write about today, as I did not feel very motivated. But then I thought about an article I've read about Captain Janeway last night. So why not write a little about her?

I have to admit that I don't care much about mingling with other Star Trek fans. They seem to be quite elite, and not very accepting of people who aren't fan of every single Star Trek series. So I keep to myself, and I am not one of those hardcore fans who can tell you which events happened at which star date. I enjoy Star Trek (TNG, Voyager, and Archer's Enterprise) for the stories and characters, the developments and the philosophy. I don't care much for huge intergalactic battles.

Captain Janeway has turned into my favourite. If I had to choose one character to meet in my life (if they all were real), then it would be her. As much as I love Picard, and as much as he helped me with getting through my childhood and teenage years, Janeway is the one who completely stole my heart (not in a romantic manner). She turned up in my life even sooner than Xena, so you could say Janeway was the first good female role model I ever had in my life. I just loved her. I wanted (and still want) to be like her. Or wanted to have her as a friend, be adopted by her. Anything.

The night before, I read an article about how Janeway is a character that divided Star Trek fans, and that many people actually hate her (what a strong word). I guess that's another reason for me to stay away from Trekkies. It tells you a lot about how compatible a fandom that prefers Kirk to Janeway would be with someone who dislikes Kirk, and adores Janeway. It was a surprise to me that people had a problem with her. Maybe those people are mainly men who don't want to see female captains. I know how sexist people still are in this regard. I could've been a paddle steamer captain by now if it hadn't been for sexist idiots who thought women should only work in a ship's galley.

And honestly: I don't care what people think about me when they know Janeway is my favourite. She just is, and why would I want to change my opinion just because the "real" Star Trek fans disagree? I just love her, she melts my heart and makes it strong at the same time, and she is one of the few people who give me hope. She's just fictional, but a fictional person can often be a better role model than a real person.

The Hobbit – thoughts about wizards, elves, dwarves and a Hobbit

My Hobbit holiday After following the progress of the making of the movie (by watching the production videos, reading interviews and articles), I was very eager to finally be able to watch the movie. I had planned a little holiday just for this purpose (and I needed time off anyway).
